Hi, I’m Sara!

I started drawing and painting as a young kid and taught myself to sew as a teenager. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Textile Design at Georgia State University, and focused on illustrative pattern design, natural dyes and Katazome; a Japanese rice paste resist technique. I partnered with Urban Outfitters while in college to create original garments that were sold nationwide.

After college, I made my way to Brooklyn, where my husband and I ran The Sketchbook Project / Brooklyn Art Library, and wrote The Sketchbook Project World Tour, published by Princeton Architectural Press. I continued to create drawings and paintings, and taught Katazome while in New York.

In 2020, I moved back to St. Petersburg, FL (where I was born), and had my first child. Becoming a mother has been a huge source of inspiration and awe for me.

Much of the work that I’ve created after moving back to St. Pete is inspired by the natural world around me, as I push a stroller through the bumpy sidewalks of my historic neighborhood.

I love making art for my kids: from birthday decorations to lunchbox notes. Recent textile patterns I’ve made have been for kids (most recently a quilt for my daughter and her cousin), and I continue to explore a playful style that might appeal to little ones.

I spend most of my time with my family, working a day job in tech, and helping our local family business, Pete’s Bagels, but I always try to find bits and pieces of time to make new work.

Some of the drawings I’ve done recently were worked on over many days, while I got 30 minutes here and there while a baby napped in the other room.
